Royal Mail or a courier?

The cheapest Royal Mail option is Tracked 48 (bought online) at £4.25, and the cheapest courier is Evri ParcelShop to ParcelShop at £2.62 – so for a coat, a courier is cheaper by £1.63. Royal Mail delivers to the door and you can hand it in at any Post Office; courier drop-off services are often cheaper but may need the recipient to collect from a shop or locker.

How to pack a coat for posting

  1. Empty the pockets and do up the zips and buttons.
  2. Fold the sleeves in, then roll the coat tightly from the bottom up.
  3. Use a large mailing bag or a vacuum bag to get it under 16cm deep.
  4. Weigh it - winter coats are often 1.2-2kg, so it's close to the Small Parcel limit.

Common mistake: A coat that's 2.1kg or 17cm deep becomes a Medium Parcel with Royal Mail - nearly double the price. Weigh and measure, or compare couriers, which charge by weight band instead.

Good to know

Heavy wool coats and parkas often weigh more than 2kg. For these, drop-off couriers are usually much cheaper than Royal Mail.

What if yours is heavier?
