Royal Mail or a courier?
The cheapest Royal Mail option is 2nd Class Large Letter at £1.90, and the cheapest courier is Evri ParcelShop to ParcelShop at £2.62 – so for A4 documents, Royal Mail is cheaper by £0.72. Royal Mail delivers to the door and you can hand it in at any Post Office; courier drop-off services are often cheaper but may need the recipient to collect from a shop or locker.
How to pack A4 documents for posting
- Use a C4 envelope so the documents can lie flat without folding.
- For certificates or photos, use a board-backed envelope marked 'Please do not bend'.
- Put the documents in a plastic sleeve inside the envelope if there's any chance of rain.
- Check the weight: around 20 sheets of standard paper plus a C4 envelope is roughly 120g.
Common mistake: Folding A4 documents into a DL envelope to save money can work, but it makes them a standard Letter only if the folded bundle is under 5mm thick - usually only 4 or 5 sheets.
